XMAS

- Growing Concern brothers are going to London this next week, so I think it's the best time to let you know what's going on.
First of all, I'd like to thank Jim from Tremors. Remember, his band struck Namur last summer with their raw punk hardcore. If you didn't hear from them and if you're into Antidote, Government Warning, SS Decontrol,... you should check them out !
Their 7", called "Island Songs" is available in the distro. You can also order from Six Feet Under Records for the USA and from The Essence Records for the UK.

Interview #3 SUNPOWER

We've decided to make an short interview with Sunpower after their show in Namur last weekend (sat.22th  October). And what a show ! Thanks to all the bands and people who were there.

I don't know what I could tell about Sunpower, except that they should rule the world. Sorry.
Oh, I can also say that we're preparing something good together... Hihihi
                                                                SUNPOWER

Max, Till, Dario, Antonin, John, Boris, Bert, je vous aime

- ME : For how long are you in punk / punk-hardcore music ? And why do you still love it (if it's the case) ?

- DAVY (drummer) : I've been involved in punk music since I discovered Nirvana at age 11.  Most people who got into my age went to other so called "grunge bands" such as Pearl Jam and Soundgarden (which I discovered later), but I had on in the direction of Dead Kennedys, Ramones, Black Flag etc...  I still love punk music today because (despite what the dance scene says about their interpretation of freedom) it's on of the most free and intense music genres you can play.  You have such a diversity from "male bonding" music such as Agnostic Front through pure Art (Suicide, Teenage Jesus & The Jerks, Minutemen) and of course, the stuff we chose to play : basic angry hardcore punk.  It seems like punk, although underestimated, is still one of the most influential music genres ever.  Without punk : there would be no Nirvana, no Sonic Youth, no Green Day etc...  And of course, the most important thing... punk gives you the opportunity to let you say what you feel inside, without having to repeat every time that you miss or love some woman.

- ME : Was it the first time you played Namur ? You have to know that this weekend you woke up the soul of an ex-skinhead dude who's now in hip-hop !

- DAVY : We played at least once in Namur, with the legendary Dead Stop.  It's nice to hear when your music influences people listening more to hardcore punk music.  I had no idea we had such impact on people, but still : fuckin-a man!  On the other hand, he shouldn't stop listening to hip-hop.  The lyrical concept of hip-hop is sometimes very interesting.  Despite the "bitches and ho's" stuff you also have things like Public Enemy, Grandmaster Flash and all those other awesome oldschool hip-hop projects!  Both can come together (cfr Beastie boys)

- M : Do you have future plans with Sunpower ? (recording new songs,...?)

- D : The last 9 years we recorded some stuff we're proud of, we played shows we're proud of, sometimes we did some things we're not that proud of... but in the end, it was all cool!  I guess you can't keep innovating yourself as a hardcore punk band but for the moment there are no plans for recording any new songs.  We'll keep on playing a handful of shows and probably will do something special at our 10 years anniversary next year.

- M : My brother told me that you said him you saw Youth of Today in Namur, I'd like to learn more.
- MIKE (singer) : I saw Youth of Today at Aalst in 1989 (a long time ago) with Project X, on that moment it was one of the most powerful performances I ever saw. After that gig they played Namur, Sammy(YOT/CIV-Drummer) told me at the CIV-show(where Sunpower did the support) that there were a lot of right-wing people at that show.

- M : What would like to say to the new "hardcore generation" ? (sorry for this horrible term)

- D : At this point... please: start a band, rehearse like a motherfucker and play shows.  Flanders is horrible!  No new bands are coming and few people seem to care about hardcore music in general.  Play what you want and don't let the public decide what you want to play...  they'll pick it up when they're ready!

I have a question for you: Before we left... we smoked some weed together with some guys... what was in it man?  That wasn't just weed...  I did google searches and thought it was pcp or opium... no idea, but we were wasted!!!

- M : Haha ! I don't really know... But be sure that it was only weed + tobacco. Probably " AMNESIA " or " WHITE MEX ". Thanks for the show and for giving me some time to answer the questions. See you !

Band of the day #7 / Interview #2 : BLINDSIDE

Yo.
Today we're going to speak about the newest belgian sensation,  BLINDSIDE.

It's not really complicated : take the brutality of Boston 80's bands (like Negative FX or SSD) and the efficiency of NYHC's best bands. You got it ? Now put everything in the hands of some young and ambitious guys.
According me, Blindside play hardcore as we need today. I remember their mini-show at Break Out Fest 2011 during the set of their friends Not Afraid. I told myself "shit, these guys are just like Tony Montana : they know where they are from, and they know where they wanna go. And moreover, they are straight edge. Mega-slap !"
And I still believe this when I listen to their demo (now recorded on Powered Records). 3 songs + the intro, it's enough to understand what hardcore is.
This interview with their singer, Christian, is probably more illustrative :

( T-Rexxx dedicated to Jux Ringlet )

Me : Hi Christian, how are you ? What's on your mind at this time ?

Christian : I'm fine thanks for asking. On my mind right now is that I should do more push ups and sharpen my knife.

Me : Tell me... How did you felt in hardcore and straight edge ?

Christian : I got into hardcore thanks to my uncle, he turned me onto some great things. He got me into Agnostic Front. But also a lot of cool European bands like Heibel and Negazione. He doesn't like the Bad Brains though, that kinda sucks.

M : I think you're a military. Punk music and defending a state / wearing an uniform don't really fit I think. Except Raybeez, what's the
"link" between those 2 parts of your life ?

C : For me it fits. The hardcore scene is a lot like the military actually. Everybody dresses the same and the longer you've been doing it the more respect you get. As a new guy you gotta prove yourself. JJ of Cro-Mags fame was also in the military so that makes puting on a uniform in the morning ten times cooler.

M : What do you think of the punk/hardcore scene of today ? Don't you miss bands who were more raw, sincere, impulsive ?

C : I think a lot of bands try too hard to sound like the bands they like. It sounds really forced.
I miss bands that just say I wanna play as hard and as fast as I can : R.I.P. Loud And Clear!

M : Believe me, I can understand it. Maybe that's why you've started Blindside ?

C : That's exactly why we started this band. We just want to play what we like without trying to figure out riffs
like math equations. It's hardcore not rocket science you nerds.

M : How was Blindside born ? And why did you chose this name ?

C : We rehearsed a few times in Amir's garage but it didn't really work out so we didn't really do nothing.
Then we went to visit our friend Maxime in Paris and he had a recording studio so we recorded some songs
and that was it basically. Blindside is an Underdog song, I think it was playing on our iPod when we drove to Paris.

M : How did you join the Powered crew ? Lots of people thought that it was dead...

C : We asked Filip to help us to put out our demo and he said he wanted to release it.
We are really grateful for his support, he has done a lot for us.
Hardcore doesn't die.

M : What are the projects with Blindside, besides playing Namur soon ?

C : Joey and Kasper are in Redemption Denied, they'll have a demo soon. Check it out if you like hard bands.
We play our release show in a few weeks, really excited about that.
My goal in life is still to win the Mr.Olympia title or solve world hunger. Whatever comes first.

                    HARDCORE LIVES !

Interview #1 GET WISE

Remember their show in Namur 6 months ago : angry voice, efficient riffs and drums. That was Get Wise, from North Belgium. Now it's time to give you some news of the band, and fuck, the news are good for them !
Check this interview with Kristof, their singer, my favorite flemish guy.

  • Me : So, let's start the interview ! If Get Wise was a color, which one would it be ? (and why)

Kristof : Fucking hell dude, that's a difficult one

Me : A shitty one, be honest...

Kristof :You're Walloon, I didn't expect anything different

    M : You're flemish, I knew that you couldn't answer any question

    K : So, we're gonna make this a racewar ?

M : No, please... but what if we talked about politics ? what do you think of the friendship between Di Rupo and De Wever ? Do you really hate Walloon ?

K : Naaah dude, of course not. Most people take that shit too serious while I'm just fucking around you know? It's funny to see people think I'm serious. And really, I have yet to find the first person who can explain the 'BHV-problem' in 3 simple sentences. I suspect even Bart and Elio don't understand the whole deal.

M : Haha i see. Personly, i think that they're just 2 clowns who have to wake us up.

K : Ow, clowns, do you know the Insane Clown Posse?

    M : No. Is he flemish ?

K : Hell no! It's some sort of redneck rap-collective. Google it dude! Juggalo! Whoop whoop!

M :I'll do it! As we're speaking about rap music... What do you think of Alkpote ?

K :Well dude, I really like rap-music, but I never dug French rap. Don't really know why, probably because I don't fucking understand it. And as for Alkpote, they seem kind of sketchy. Are they from Namur?

M : No, Paris. But we don't care ! Let's get back to the main reason of this interview : GET WISE. What are your plans ?

K : We recorded some new songs this weekend which will appear on a split with xEisbergx. I'm so stoked on that! We also have a small UK-tour coming up in December together with Think Twice and Speak Up. Be sure to check all the bands I just mentioned! And well, since I like playing, we'll try and play as much as possible! Any time, anywhere!

M : Cool ! I wish good luck with all this.  In fact, why did you call the band "Get Wise" ?

K : Thanks bro! I'm sorry to dissappointment you but the name didn't originate from the 'The First Step' -song (although I tell most people 'cause the first step was an amazing band, right?) We just were looking for a name that would fit us and Joris (our bassplayer) came up with the name and it just stuck. We all have this view that there are so many people around without a clue. They need to get wise.

                                                                                                                                                                                 PAST SHOW (15/04/2011)
M : The First Step rules, that's right. I received my Warzone - Don't forget the struggle, don't.... LP and the picture inside shows Raybeez wearing a cap "Get Wise". I thought of you : you should make a t-shirt with that photo !

K : Ow dude, that's just awesome! Really should start saving some money to buy that album myself. Those 2 things probably sum up what hardcore for me is all about. Warzone and doing things yourself! Yeah bro, we really should do that.

M : Here's the next question : for you, is that ideology before music or music before ideology ?

K : Mos def music before ideology. Don't get me wrong, hardcore-bands should have a message to spread. But from another point of view, we're only on this earth for a limited amount of time. Better try and enjoy while it lasts. And after all, worldpeace can't be done.

M : Ik ga akkoord met jou. And what's the message of Get Wise ? except that people have to get wise, of course...

K : It has been said before, and a lot, but it holds so much truth: People should think for themselves and figure out themselves what is the right thing to do. I know I always try to do the right thing but it seems to me a lot of peope just don't think things through sometimes.

M : Anyway, that's not a bad message, and it seems that people didn't understand it even after 30 years...
A last question then you'll be free : could you give us your opinion of what you think of Namur, Growing Concern,... ?

K : Can't really tell a lot about Namur dude. Obviously Growing Concern fucking rules! And I really do mean that! You have the heart in the right place and since you seem to have about the same taste in bands, you really put up cool shows! What I did like when we played namur was that there still were skinheads on a hardcoreshow! That's just plain awesome! More hardcorekids should listen to oi! and vice versa!

M : Hahaha yeah but it was skinheads with Slipknot t-shirts, not real skinheads. I miss skinheads too... By the way, thanks for the sweet words !

K : There definitely was at least one real skinhead there bro! That's enough to get me happy!
No problem! It was a nice talk. Keep up the good work. People should check out Bang Bros, Conviction, Violent City, Trapped Inside and fucking worship Cornered ! And thanks for the opportunity to speak up!

M : You're welcome, thank you too ! I hope to see you again here in Namur !
